It is the heritage of this Galle Fort property that makes Amangalla one of the best hotels in Sri Lanka. During its 400-year history, Amangalla has been a military base, party hotspot, and in setting out as the New Oriental in 1865 is now one of the oldest hotels in the country.
Amangalla still exudes old-world luxury at every turn, with a period restaurant, lounge and library and 17th-century architectural features. The colonial-style bedrooms still retain their original wood floors and are furnished with four-poster beds, writing desk, chest, and dining area. The ensuite bathrooms have large showers with some also featuring a freestanding bathtub.
Dine on exquisite cuisine in the Great Hall or out on the street-facing veranda for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and afternoon tea. The sensational lower-level spa has several treatment rooms in addition to a hydrotherapy pool, steam room and sauna, and beauty area. There is also a pool in idyllic private gardens, a pavilion for yoga or meditation, and a well-stocked library with historic books and board games.
