Sustainability

Travel responsibly in Sri Lanka while protecting ecosystems and giving back to communities

Ensuring tourism creates a brighter future for Sri Lanka’s vital ecosystems and rural communities

We care deeply about the impact our holidays have on the environment and people of Sri Lanka.
We believe thoughtfully designed, sustainable tourism can benefit rural communities and conserve wildlife and ecosystems, all while creating lifelong memories for travellers.

In 2019 we made our first steps, committing to only using glass and reusable bottles in our vehicles, banning elephant back rides and discouraging visits to local schools to avoid
disruption to children’s education.

Our efforts have expanded significantly since then, working with local partners as well as
learning from international experts. We continue to learn and grow
our ambitions in our path towards sustainability.

Impact

In September 2024 we founded our Impact foundation, to focus our ESG efforts across three core pillars: empowering women, restoring ecosystems and conserving wildlife.

These align with 15 of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and aim to create meaningful positive change for the people and wild places of Sri Lanka. We have a dedicated Impact team who work with partner organisations and keep in regular contact with the communities we support.

Impact projects

In 2024 we are proud to have completed three key projects in line with our Impact pillars,
which you can learn more about below. Just four months after the creation of our Impact foundation, we have prevented 55,502kg of waste from going into the ocean, restored 2 hectares of land and directly benefitted 40 individuals in remote communities.

Community Bee Keeping,

Anuradhapura

A TFG-designed project to empower women to become beekeepers, creating new income streams, improving farm harvests and supporting rural families. A low cost, repeatable model which has true impact.

Ocean Plastics,

Colombo

We’ve made a 3 year commitment to supporting an ocean strainer device which collects waste from Colombo’s longest canal. Approximately 1,500kg of waste every day is caught before reaching the ocean.

Habitat Restoration,

Yala

Working with the FEO Trust, we’ve supported community-led clearing of invasive plant species from our client’s favourite area of Yala National Park, Block 5, making way for indigenous plants and wildlife to flourish.

Sustainable Experiences

Our team at TFG is continually designing new experiences to enrich the travel experience
for your clients, as well as connect them to people and places that would
otherwise not receive any footfall or benefit from tourism.

Talk to us about our locally hosted experiences, which include dinner with elephant conservationists,
trekking a section of the Pekoe trail with a guide and exploring paddy farms by local tractor.
Or opt for low carbon footprint experiences such as kayaking along isolated rivers, cycling
through Anuradhapura and walking excursions of every variety, from foodie to art to religion.
By booking these experiences you are helping to bring vital income to improve the livelihoods
of remote communities, including supporting access to education and healthcare.

2025 & Beyond

Our goal for 2025 is to go further and deeper in our journey towards making all of our Sri Lanka trips more sustainable and responsible. This flows through everything we do, from our employment
policies at TFG, through our entire supply chain from water bottle producers to how we select and support accommodation and activity providers.

We are working to build our long-term sustainability strategy to keep focus on our three pillars, and to share our learnings and successes along the way through reporting. Projects for the year ahead include continued efforts to reduce our carbon footprint as well as expanding our range of Impact projects to bring benefits to more regions of Sri Lanka.

Two of our team have extended their commitment to this mission outside of their day job, acting as mentors for the Women in Travel Collective. And we are proud members of The Conscious Travel Foundation, which brings together thought leaders and creates a space to collaborate and learn with others on this evolution towards impactful travel.

None of this would be possible without the support of our loyal agent partners and conservation heroes in the field, so we’d like to say thank you for all you do in helping support our Impact goals. We look forward to sharing more stories and updates with you as the year unfolds.
